1. Snorkel Maui's Underwater World
Maui is surrounded by incredible snorkeling opportunities, and you don't necessarily have to go far to find them.

Depending on where you're staying and ocean conditions, you may encounter colorful reef fish, coral and Hawaii's beloved green sea turtles.


You can snorkel directly from several beaches or make a bigger adventure of it with a boat excursion.

2. Experience the Road to Hana
Yes, it's famous. Yes, it's a long day. And yes, it can absolutely be worth it.

The Road to Hana is less about reaching Hana and more about everything you encounter along the way — rainforest, waterfalls, dramatic coastline and those moments when Maui suddenly looks nothing like the resort area you left that morning.


The key is not trying to stop at everything.

3. Watch Sunrise or Sunset From Haleakalā
Standing above the clouds at Haleakalā feels like you've temporarily left Hawaii and landed on another planet.

Sunrise gets most of the attention, but sunset can be spectacular too — and doesn't require quite such a painful alarm clock! 

Just remember: you're going to 10,000 feet.

Bring layers.

Yes, even though you're in Hawaii.

4. Chase a Waterfall
Maui's lush side is filled with waterfalls and rainforest scenery.

A guided waterfall hike can be especially worthwhile if you want to get beyond the roadside viewpoints and experience more of the island's tropical landscape.

5. Get Out on the Water
One of our favorite ways to experience Maui is from the ocean


Catamaran cruises, sailing trips and other boat excursions give you a completely different perspective of the island.


Add a sunset and it gets even better.

6. Go Whale Watching
If you're visiting during Maui's whale season, this deserves a spot near the top of your list.


Humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters each winter, and seeing one breach from a boat is something you don't forget.

7. Take an ATV Adventure
Ready to get dirty?


An ATV excursion lets you experience a completely different side of Maui — trails, mountains and landscapes you'd never see from your beach chair.


This can be a particularly fun choice for families traveling with older kids and teens.

8. Learn to Surf
You are in Hawaii, after all.


A beginner surf lesson can be much less intimidating than it sounds, especially with an instructor choosing conditions appropriate for first-timers.


And even if you spend more time falling than surfing?

9. Zipline Over Maui
For a different perspective, take to the trees.


Maui has zipline experiences that combine a little adrenaline with some pretty spectacular island scenery.


This can also be a great way to break up several consecutive beach days.

10. Do Absolutely Nothing
Plot twist.


This may be one of Maui's most underrated activities.


Don't schedule every minute of your vacation.


Leave yourself a day when the itinerary consists of:

Beach.

Pool.

Lunch.

Maybe another beach.


There's a difference between seeing Maui and actually enjoying being there.

That's where planning matters.


A honeymoon couple may want a sunrise, snorkeling trip and romantic sunset sail.


A family with teenagers might be much happier with snorkeling, surfing and ATVs.
